A £150 Surprise from a Very Generous Yorkshireman!

A chance meeting at Scarborough leads to an unexpected donation for Yorkshire Disability Cricket

Sometimes, when you're out and about promoting a book, you never quite know where a conversation might lead.

Back in July, the What Yorkshire Cricket Means To Me team met Graham Bradbury at Scarborough Cricket Club. Graham is a well-known and much-loved figure in the York area, recognised for his tremendous charitable work and his commitment to supporting community causes.

We tried our best to sell Graham a copy of the book that day, but he was proving rather cagey! In the end, we reached an agreement that we would donate a copy to his next charity event. At the time, we had absolutely no idea what a fantastic investment that would turn out to be.

Graham, a former referee, is involved in an incredible amount of charitable activity. Among many other things, he organises the community carol concert and helps arrange dinners and fundraising events supporting many local charities across the city.

Following a successful charity golf day, Graham got in touch to tell us that the York City Past Players wanted to make a donation of £150 to the charity supported by What Yorkshire Cricket Means To Me.

Graham explained: ‘Having held a successful charity golf day last week – with a very good raffle – the York City Past Players would like to make a donation to you of £150 (cost of 10 books!!)’

The golf day itself had been held in aid of Paddy McLaughlin's Testimonial Fund, which also supported Menfulness, and the event raised an impressive £5,600.

Graham added: "We were pleased to raise £5,600 on the day – but are also delighted that we can also donate a small amount to you."

For us, it was anything but a small gesture. The £150 donation has been ringfenced to support Disability Cricket in Yorkshire, helping provide opportunities, equipment and support for players who love the game just as much as we do.

We can't thank Graham, his friends, family and everyone who supported the golf day enough for their generosity and for choosing to support the Yorkshire Players Association through their fundraising.

And Graham's final comment made us smile: "You see, Yorkshiremen are not all tight and miserly – we do have a generous side to us."
